I was particularly inspired by the labors of monks who would dedicate their lives to bring the scriptures to life through their art…

Growing up in Eastern Europe the only images of the Savior we had were the iconic depictions of a frail and suffering Christ.

I still remember how moved I was, the first time I attended a sacrament meeting in Bulgaria. It was in a small room rented out from a local soccer stadium and the Elders had taped up the Del Parson’s depiction of Jesus in a Red Robe. I had never seen him in that light and radiant form and just seeing the Savior in that light brought a spirit which filled my soul with a witness of his love and divinity.

While I didn’t care much for the iconic art of the Orthodox Church, living in an area with such rich history I still greatly admired the historical artifacts and ideas of people seeking spiritual light and truth through the ages. I was particularly inspired by the labors of monks who would dedicate their lives to bring the scriptures to life through their art.

In this project I combine this old world technique of the Illuminated Manuscript with photography to create a modern work that enriches our view of the scriptures and the Savior’s life. —Eva Koleva Timothy, 2020
