"A House Unto My Name"

Lowell Fitt began work on the sculpture above three or four years ago when he amassed small steel cuttings. In his mind’s eye, he could imagine the pieces coming together: “…the mix of the scrap pretty closely resembled the confusion and lack of focus in our ever more non-religious world view and the lack of any focus let alone a divine focus.”

From his cuttings, he created a globe and then decided to use a small gem stone to represent each of the temples (including announced and those under construction) in the world. It was his goal to replicate the Church’s mission to “fill the earth with sacred edifices that will bless the lives of God’s children throughout the world.”

Gospel Questions

  1. Jesus describes how he loves Hyrum Smith "because of the integrity of his heart" (D&C 124:15) and explains that George Miller can "be trusted because of the in-tegrity of his heart" (D&C 124:20). What does it mean to have integrity of heart? What can you do to strengthen the integrity of your heart?

  2. In addition to a temple, the Saints are instructed to build a boarding house for strangers, "a delightful habitation" and "a resting-place for the weary," called the Nauvoo House (D&C 124:23-24, 56, 60). Why is taking care of strangers part of our worship? (See  Matthew 25;43; "[I]n the Lords' plan, our commitment to welfare princi-ples should be at the very root of our faith and devotion to Him," Dieter F. Uchdorf, "Pro-viding in the Lord's Way," October 2011 General Conference.

  3. William Law was commanded to proclaim the gospel "with a loud voice, and with great joy, as he shall be moved upon by my Spirit" (D&C 124:88). Which is harder for you when sharing the gospel: the loud voice or the great joy? What makes this uniquely hard?

For Children & Youth

Hi. Do you like to put jigsaw puzzles together? In the sculpture by [artist], the artist took lots of tiny scraps of metal and then connected them together to make a globe of the whole world. I wonder what you could use to make a jigsaw puzzle sculpture. Do you want to try?

  1. When the Saints settled in a new place in Illinois, they named their place Nauvoo, which means beautiful in Hebrew.  What name would you give to your home and why?  Talk about it with your family and maybe together you can make a plaque of the name for your home to remind you why you chose that name.

  2. President Howard W. Hunter was the 14th president of our Church.  He told us to "Keep a picture of a temple in your home" (President Howard W. Hunter, "A Temple-Motivated People," October 2010 Liahona).  Make a picture of your favorite temple and display it in your home.

  3. In these scriptures, a lot of people are commanded by the Lord to help Joseph Smith, who had a lot of responsibilities [e.g."let him assist my servant Joseph" (D&C 124"107)].  Who helps you to follow the commandments, make good choices and do the important things that God wants you to do?  What can you do to support others when they choose the right?

Art project

Jesus instructs Robert Foster in D&C 124:116 to "clothe himself with charity." What might a coat of charity look like? What would it be made of? What fea-tures would it have? Create a promotional ad for a charity coat.
