April 14-20: Easter

“I Am He Who Liveth, I Am He Who Was Slain”

Brittany Lemmon (American, 1987)
Refraction (2024)
oil on canvas, 36 x 36 inches
Used with artist’s permission

In Refraction, artist Brittany Lemmon paints a moment full of tenderness and power. The piece encapsulates multiple Christian iconography symbols, both hidden and obvious. Light breaks and bends across the canvas in angular shards, suggesting the ways Christ’s Atonement touches our brokenness and transforms it into something beautiful. On Easter, we celebrate that through His suffering, death, and Resurrection, Jesus Christ reaches for us—healing, guiding, and gathering us in His love.

Discussion Questions

  1. The image of refraction in this painting suggests how light can change direction but still illuminate. How have you experienced the Savior’s love reaching you in unexpected ways?

  2. The Savior’s hand bears the mark of His crucifixion but is extended in peace. What does this visual say about the relationship between Christ’s suffering and His ministry?

  3. The lamb in the painting echoes many scriptural references to Christ as the Lamb of God. How do you see both the Savior and yourself in this image?

For Children & Youth

Hi friends! Easter is the most amazing day—it’s when we celebrate that Jesus is alive again and that He did something incredible for all of us. In this painting by Brittany Lemon, Jesus is reaching out to a little lamb, and there’s light everywhere—sparkling, bending, and shining through like a rainbow. The light reminds us of how His love can find us even when things feel broken or hard. Just like that lamb, you are precious to Him, and He will always reach out to you.

Discussion Questions

  1. What do you notice first in the painting? How does it make you feel

  2. The lamb is often a symbol of Jesus—and sometimes of us too! Why do you think the artist chose to include a lamb?

  3. What are some ways you can feel Jesus’s love for you this Easter? Can you think of a time you’ve felt His light?

Art Project

Make your own “refraction” collage. Cut or tear pieces of tissue paper or colored paper into triangle and prism-like shapes. On each piece, write a word that reminds you of Jesus (like “kind,” “healer,” “light,” “friend”). Glue them onto a blank page to form your own light beam or stained-glass-style pattern. Add a cross or a picture of the Savior in the center to show how His light brings everything together.
