We read of Noah and the flood in the book of Genesis, but instead of discussing a global, watery catastrophe, let's look at an emotional parallel: the inundation, the feelings of being overwhelmed, underwater, and without something solid beneath our feet. Everyone can relate to that; moreover, many suffer with their mental health at debilitating levels. Looking at Michelle Nixon's image of a flooded area near her home is a metaphor for those sinking feelings.

For many, being overwhelmed is an increasingly prominent aspect of their lives. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults experienced mental illness in 2020, representing approximately 53 million Americans. Anxiety and depression were the most common disorders. In early 2022, the World Health Organization issued a statement that there has been a 25% increase in prevalence of anxiety and depression across the globe. The Church's website on mental health is an excellent resource for individuals, families, and leaders. Apostles and prophets have spoken with plainness and with open hearts about their own struggles, including President Dallin H. Oaks' discussion of the pain his family felt upon the death of his father, President George Albert Smith long struggle with anxiety and depression, and Elder Holland's frankness about a difficult time, "At one point in our married life when financial fears collided with staggering fatigue, I took a psychic blow that was as unanticipated as it was real." He said, "Also let us remember that through any illness or difficult challenge, there is still much in life to be hopeful about and grateful for. We are infinitely more than our limitations or our afflictions!" ("Like a Broken Vessel," October 2013 General Conference.)

Gospel Questions
1. Make a list of all of the symbolism in the story of Noah and the ark. What do these symbols teach you about Heavenly Father's plan and His love for you?

2. The flood is a story of a drastic purge or cleansing, with a "start over" or reset. If you were to make a reset in your life, what would be the things you would choose to put on your ark? What would you let wash away?

3. Noah spent nearly his whole life preaching repentance with little effect on the people around him. In the end, he saved only himself and his family. What can we learn from this example about our own lives?

For Children and Youth
Hi. In the story of Noah, the flood covered everything, and it may have felt scary and overwhelming. Sometimes our feelings can feel like that too—like we are underwater and need help. God cared for Noah, and He cares for us when we feel worried, sad, or overwhelmed.

1. When you feel overwhelmed or upset, what is your safe or calm place to go?
