The Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai and establish their covenant relationship with God. After delivering them from Egypt, God calls the people to be a holy nation and prepares them to meet Him amid thunder, fire, and smoke on the mountain. The Lord gives the Ten Commandments to Moses along with additional laws that shape Israel's worship, justice system, and daily life. Israel’s commitment to obey the Lord is sealed by covenant. God provides detailed instructions for the Tabernacle, the priesthood, and the Sabbath, showing how He will dwell among His people. However, while Moses is on the mountain, the people grow impatient and create a golden calf, breaking the covenant almost immediately. Moses intercedes for the nation, pleading for God’s mercy and continued presence. The covenant is renewed by God, and Israels relationship with God is restored despite their failure.

A covenant relationship with God is a serious privilege. Holiness and obedience are essential for continuing to enjoy God’s presence. The golden calf demonstrates how quickly impatience and idolatry can distort faith. Consider Brian Call's piece 100 years of Service as you reflect on the role that Moses played in guiding Israel, and how modern prophets guide God's people today.
