This week's lesson contains the extraordinary story of a Jewish woman named Esther. She becomes queen, guided by her cousin and guardian Mordecai. When the royal official Haman becomes angry that Mordecai refuses to bow to him, he persuades the king to issue a decree ordering the destruction of all Jewish people in the empire. Esther risks her life by approaching the king without being summoned in order to plead for her people. Through courage and wisdom Haman’s plot is exposed, and the Jewish people are saved.

The story of Esther resonates today because it shows how one person’s courage can make a powerful difference for many others. People often face moments when doing the right thing requires speaking up, even when it is uncomfortable or risky. Esther’s example encourages individuals to use their position, influence, or opportunities to help protect others and promote justice. The book also reminds readers that even when circumstances seem uncertain, hope and unexpected solutions can emerge through courage, wisdom, and faith.

We all have public and private versions of ourselves--the face we present to others and the one we see in the mirror. Esther's story is relevant to us today because she was courageous and was true to herself. Photographer Linda Hsuing wrote this about the photograph, Sam: "This image is from my series Man Enough which explores masculinity among male students at Brigham Young University through the intersections of race, religion, and age. This photograph features my friend Sam and reflects his experience navigating identity as a Mexican American living in Utah, revealing a quieter, more private self beyond the mask he often wears in public." How does this work connect with the themes of book of Esther?

Gospel Questions

1. In a world so big, our individual actions can feel like they dont make a difference. How can Esther be an inspiration and an example to act anyway?

2. Bravery calls to mind superheroes, fighting dragons, and putting ones life at risk. But instances for that sort of bravery seldom appear in everyday life. Have you aschewed being brave because of how insignificant the moment seemed?

3. How would your home, community, job, or important relationships be improved by your bravery?

For Children and Youth
