10 Works To Know: A Perfect Atonement
Every artist gives something up to achieve their work. They sacrifice their time, their comfort levels, their sense of self; offering up parts of themselves into their own personal creative pursuits. Eventually, after much of this process (and usually after a wrestle or struggle in its own right), every artist steps back and declares, almost messianically, “it is finished.” The point at which a work-in-progress becomes a finished piece is decided by the artist– they’ve done the work, after all.
The artworks collected here depict the events of Easter– just some of the places, events, and people that Jesus encountered in those few miraculous days. We invite you to notice the differences in perspectives and methods used by each artist. Some are more traditional, some abstract.
The Atonement these works depict, however, is not abstract. Nor is it simply a tradition. It’s very real and deeply personal. It meets us in our darkest hours and promises us light. It speaks not only of suffering, but of wholeness and healing, of a future more radiant than the past.
The title of this list comes from Doctrine & Covenants 76:69, where Joseph Smith describes those who accept the gospel of Jesus Christ as people who are “made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood.”
How divinely reassuring to know that someday, work-in-progress people like us can rely on a perfect Atonement to overcome. to understand. To draw closer. As the artist and architect of the Atonement, Christ knows when we are enough.
Because he said: “it is finished,” we can say: “I am whole.”
